An Illinois man is dead after he disarmed a police officer conducting a well-being check and shot himself with the officer’s weapon.
The Charleston Police Department said officers were called to the home just after 1 a.m. on Saturday to check on a 22-year-old man who had called 911 himself asking for help.
“During the course of this investigation, a rapidly evolving event took place where a CPD officer was disarmed,” the department said in a statement. “Preliminary investigation indicates the individual became in possession of this firearm and discharged the firearm toward himself.”
Medics were called in and transported the man to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
“No officers were injured during the incident,” the department said.
Police said they had requested the assistance of the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigations to investigate the circumstance around the incident.
