Florida sheriffs were involved in a traffic stop shooting of a Georgia man wanted for child sex crimes.
Fox5 reported that Matthew Steven Rollie, 30, was wanted by Forsyth County law enforcement for sexual crimes involving a child. Forsyth County had issued a warrant for Rollie’s arrest.
The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office learned that Rollie was in their area and actively began a search.
On Saturday, shortly after 2 a.m., officers spotted a vehicle that they believed was associated with Rollie.
While the officers attempted to identify the passenger, he pulled out a gun and began firing at them. One officer was struck multiple times, according to WINK News.
One officer returned fire, killing the passenger, who was identified as Rollie.
The injured officer is receiving medical treatment and is expected to recover.
An investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is underway due to the officer-involved shooting.
