A Maine man has been arrested and charged with killing his wife while the couple was visiting his parents in Readfield.
Maine State Police said they and Winthrop Police responded to a home just after 10 a.m. on Wednesday and found Margaux Whittermore, 32, dead outside the home. Dorothy Whittemore, her 67-year-old mother-in-law, was found inside the home with critical injuries and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Her condition has since been upgraded.
The suspect, Dorothy Whittemore’s 34-year-old son Samuel Whittemore, had fled the scene but was found a short distance away by a state trooper. He was taken to a hospital for an evaluation before being transported to the Kennebec County Jail.
Whittemore’s father was not at home at the time of the attacks but arrived shortly thereafter.
Police have not released the cause of Margaux Whittemore’s death but say it has been ruled a homicide. Samuel Whittemore has been charged with murder.
