Florida authorities say an 80-year-old man killed another man and woman and then himself at a retirement community in Pompano Beach.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said they were called for a welfare check on Wednesday night in the Leisureville community and found two vehicles in the driveway and a mailbox overflowing with mail. They called for assistance from Pompano Beach Fire Rescue when no one answered the door.
Inside, they found three people, all with apparent gunshot wounds. They identified James Sheridan as the shooter and withheld the identities of the victims pending notification of next of kin.
All three were pronounced dead at the scene.
Neighbors told WTVJ that Sheridan lived at the home with his wife and son but that no one in the community really knew them.
“The neighbors were very quiet people. We saw them coming and going, just a wave. Nobody really knew them. They lived here renting for about a year,” Lauren Goltz said. “These people have been here like a year and they’re like strangers.”
Ponpano Beach Animal Control removed a cat believed to have been a family pet on Thursday, the station said.
