Maryland Deputy Charged With Assaulting Family Member, Suspended With Pay

A Maryland sheriff’s deputy was suspended with pay this week after his arrested for assaulting a family member.

Charles County Deputy David Moats, 26, was arrested on Thursday by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office following an incident earlier that day, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said.

He was suspended “pending the outcome of the investigation” and the sheriff’s office Office of Professional Responsibility initiated its own investigation.

The Bay Net reported that Moats was initially held without bail but was released on his own recognizance following a court appearance on Friday.

He is due in court again on April 21.

The sheriff’s office said Moats had been with the department for about a year and a half.
