No Foul Play Suspected After 6-Year-Girl Is Found Dead in Livestock Barrel

The death of a 6-year-old Mississippi girl who was found hours after she vanished on Sunday was an accident, officials said on Thursday.

WDSU reported that Gracelynn Vick was discovered in a 58-gallon livestock food barrel about 50 feet from her family’s back door in Saucier. Though her exact cause of death remains undetermined, authorities believe Vick climbed into the barrel while playing and became trapped, resulting in her death.

Harrison County Sheriff Matt Haley likened Vick’s death to being stuck in a hot car. Officials believe limited oxygen in the barrel and heat stress contributed to her death, according to WLOX.

Police said surveillance footage from the day Vick disappeared showed nobody else on the property.

The medical examiner noted that Vick had no signs of trauma, neglect, or sexual abuse. Foul play is not suspected in her death.
